A free SEO strategy session is the fastest diagnostic I know for a stuck site.

Thirty minutes. Five specific checks. Three concrete next steps. Done.

This article walks you through exactly how I run one — what I look at, in what order, what I'm trying to find, and how I turn the findings into a clear plan you can act on the same week.

If you're considering booking one (with me or anyone else), this is the inside view of how a useful free SEO strategy session actually works.

The premise: 30 minutes is enough — if you triage right

Most paid SEO audits take 15-30 hours and produce a 200-point document the client never reads.

The honest truth: 80% of the available upside on most stuck sites lives in 4-5 issues. The rest is refinement.

A free SEO strategy session works because we ignore the 195 refinements and find the 4-5 that matter. Live. Together. In half an hour.

That's the entire approach.

If you've ever read the 25-point SEO audit checklist on this site or the how to do an SEO audit walkthrough, this is the live, two-way version of that — but compressed to the highest-leverage checks.

The 5 things I check on every free SEO strategy session

Same order, every call, no exceptions. The order matters — it surfaces the biggest issues first.

Check 1 — Indexation (the silent killer)

First thing I look at: are your money pages actually indexed?

I open your Search Console > Pages report and look at what's in "Not indexed."

If your commercial pages are sitting in there — comparison pages, landing pages, your top-converting blog posts — nothing else matters until that's fixed.

This single check has been the answer on more "why aren't we ranking" calls than any other diagnostic.

It takes 90 seconds and it's invisible to most operators because they don't check Search Console regularly. Live on a call, we find it in minutes.

Check 2 — Internal links to money pages

Next: which pages are getting the most internal links on the site?

I want to see your highest-value commercial pages — the ones that actually convert to revenue — receiving the most internal links from your blog.

Most sites do the opposite. They link heavily to "thought leadership" blog posts that don't convert, and orphan the pages that do.

If your money pages are starved of internal links, no amount of external backlinks will fix the ranking gap. This is fixable in an afternoon. Usually moves rankings within 30 days.

Check 3 — Backlink velocity vs competitors

Now we open Ahrefs (yours or mine — I share screen if you don't have a paid tool).

I compare your referring domain velocity to your top 3 competitors over the last 12 months.

If they're earning 4x the new links you are, you'll fall behind regardless of how good your content is. Authority is the lever that opens the door.

I tell you straight: is link velocity your real bottleneck, or are you fine on links and need to fix the on-page work first? This is one of the most common confusions I unstick on these calls.

If links ARE the bottleneck, we talk about whether to DIY (the free Link Building Mastery book covers the system), work with us at Goldie Agency, or use a white-label partner.

Check 4 — Intent match on your top targets

I pick 3-5 of your highest-priority keywords and we Google them together.

Then I ask you to honestly assess: does your page match the format Google is rewarding?

If the top 10 results for "best CRM software" are all listicles and your page is a 4,000-word essay, that's why you're not ranking. You can't fight the SERP's intent.

This is the check that catches the most "we wrote great content but it's not ranking" situations. The content is genuinely great. It's just the wrong format for the intent.

Check 5 — One commercial page deep-dive

Last 5 minutes: I pick one commercial page (you choose — usually your highest-value one) and we go through it together.

Title, meta, H1, intent match, internal links coming in, internal links going out, schema, conversion CTA placement, comparison to top-ranking competitor.

You walk away with a specific list of changes to make on that one page, this week, that will move it.

If we did the previous four checks right, the page-level diagnosis is where the gap goes from "I know what to fix" to "I know exactly what to do tomorrow morning."

The three deliverables I aim for in 30 minutes

By the end of every free SEO strategy session, you should have:

1. A clear diagnosis of the single biggest lever. Not "improve everything." The specific thing that, if fixed, will move the needle most on your account.

2. Two or three secondary fixes ordered by impact, with the specific next action for each.

3. A clean answer to "do I need an agency?" If yes, what scope. If no, what to do yourself — and what free resource to start with.

If you don't leave with those three by minute 30, the call wasn't worth your time and I genuinely think you should tell me so I can refund the time by running it again next week.

(Nobody's ever taken me up on that. The three deliverables show up every call.)

What separates a useful strategy session from a sales pitch

Three things, in order of importance:

The diagnosis comes first, the pitch comes last (if at all). Mine never starts pitching before minute 22, and only if you ask. Most agencies invert this — pitch first, then a thin diagnosis to feel like value was delivered. Walk away from those.

Every recommendation is specific to your site. Generic advice like "do more link building" is useless. Real advice is "your /pricing page has zero internal links and is buried 4 clicks from the homepage — fix that this week and it'll move within 30 days."

The follow-up email recaps everything in writing. Verbal advice fades in 48 hours. Written recap keeps it actionable. Within 24 hours of every session I send a summary so you actually do the things.

If a "free SEO strategy session" you're considering fails on any of those three, it's a sales call wearing a costume.

When the answer is "fix this one thing first"

Sometimes the most useful 30 minutes I give someone is the one where I say:

"Don't hire an agency. Don't even hire a consultant. Spend the next 60 days doing this one specific thing, then come back and we'll talk."

Common examples:

Those calls are still useful. You leave with a clear plan that doesn't cost you a retainer.

How a strategy session compares to a paid SEO audit

A paid audit is 15-30 hours of work and produces a written document covering everything.

A free SEO strategy session is 30 minutes and covers the biggest 4-5 issues.

Different tools, different jobs:

For 80% of operators, the strategy session is the right starting point. The 25-point checklist on the homepage of this site walks you through the DIY version if you want to self-audit before booking.

FAQ — free SEO strategy session (audit angle)

What's the difference between this and a paid SEO audit?

A paid audit is comprehensive and documented (15-30 hours, $2K-$10K). A free SEO strategy session is a 30-minute live triage that finds the biggest 4-5 issues. Different tools for different jobs.

What if my Search Console isn't set up?

Get it set up first — it's free and takes 15 minutes. Without GSC there's no honest diagnosis. If you're stuck on the setup, the free SEO audit checklist on this site walks you through it.

Will you share screen and look at my Ahrefs live?

Yes. If you have Ahrefs or Semrush, share view access for 30 minutes. If not, I share my screen and pull what I need from my account.

What if I'm not sure what my biggest SEO problem is?

That's exactly what the call is for. You don't need to diagnose yourself before booking — that's what the 30 minutes are for.

Can you do the call asynchronously instead of live?

No. The whole point of the live format is the back-and-forth. Async loses 80% of the value.

Do you record the session?

If you want a recording, ask when you book and I'll record. I send the link in the follow-up email.
